Sculpting Progress

Just a quick update, but I've made some more progress learning to sculpt in zbrush with the end goal of creating some miniatures for myself. I've got a number of heads completed and just need to figure out the best way to get them printed. I'm not sure if it's better to print them attached to a sprue (more expensive) or print them individually and then attach them to a piece of plastic sprue myself.

Two of the five trooper heads I sculpted.

All my helmeted heads ready to be sprued.

Trying to get some advice on how to orient the heads for casting and venting.

A sci-fi helmet for my dastardly cannon fodder troops.
Once I get the masters printed out I'll tackle casting them in resin as a proof of concept (which is a while other kettle of fish I've been putting off until I got some 3D modeling under my belt!)

  2. Not sure where you're printing them, but Shapeways ultra detail acrylic stuff is much cheaper on a sprue. I had a 28mm gun that was £3.00 to print one, but only £3.30 to print off six when I joined them with sprues. It's definitely worth checking how much they will cost as a sprue

    1. Wow! Really? I hadn't even considered that. I'm off to create sprues for all the heads I want printed. Thank you so much for the advice, a real help!

  3. Thanks Lee! Let's hope they turn out ok once in a physical format!

  4. Shapeways has a per file and per part fee in addition to the usual volume/surface area costs, so that is where you may save money with sprues or even just having all of your heads in one upload.

Printing a few of my space ships in one file was about $5 cheaper than printing them separately, and using a sprue would have saved a bit more too.

    1. You aren't kidding! After attaching five heads to a sprue, the price was less than double that of a head by itself.
